College was an unforgettable rite of passage, but reliving it today would be a different story. Most college kids are completely shameless and do things that only a college kid would do. Hey, don’t get me wrong – college is the best time of your life! But there are things I did then that I would never do now, and of course, there are things I wish I could still do (see #6 – napping).
Here are 6 things you do in college that you can’t get away with in adult life:
1. You let your bank account balance dip below a reasonable amount.
There will be times that you just keep charging your debit card and you either get too drunk or too afraid to look at the damage. In college, I honestly let my account dip down to less than $5 more times than I care to admit. I want to say do yourself a favor and have some sort of backup funds besides mom and dad, but in reality, every college kid is poor af.
Live your life young grasshoppers because one day when you have bills and that $0.86 bank account balance will give you mad anxiety.
2. You eat anything and everything that is free.
If it was free, it was for me. Whether it was pizza at the gym or college day at Chick-fil-a, I was there. If it wasn’t free, it was the buy one, get one freebies at Publix, or Ramen Noodles. Enjoy the fast metabolism while you have it because this low sugar, low carb diet I now live on is for the birds. And healthy food is stupid expensive.
3. You binge drink more than half your week, every week.
Shots-shots-shots-shots-shots… Alllllll of the shots. When you’re a college kid, your hangover recovery time is on point. You can drink all your little heart desires, pop a couple of Advil, chug a glass of water, and down a piece of greasy pizza, and be good as new the next morning. Then you repeat, repeat, and repeat some more.
When I binge drink now, I get stuck hanging out with the porcelain God for half the morning. My body physically cannot handle it. You say shots; I’m going home.
4. You and your friends have the same clothes.
Or do you just share clothes? That is the more likely answer. The beauty of having roommates and being in college is you and your friends can share clothes. Whether you live in a sorority house, an on-campus housing building, or a campus apartment, you’re in close enough proximity to exchange clothes when needed. When you’re on that college budget, it’s the cheapest way to expand your wardrobe.
To say I don’t share clothes with my friends now would be a lie. Occasionally we do like to still swap for a night out, but for the most part, we are all living in separate cities now. We also have more money to spend on nicer clothes, so there are some things better left unshared anyway.
5. You are okay with sharing one hotel room with 12 people.
Air mattress? Check. Extra pillow and blankets? Check. Twelve of your closest friends in the same hotel room? College. Whether it be for Spring Break or a big rivalry football game out of town, you were determined to shove as many people in one hotel room as possible. You would do anything to stretch your drinking budget.
6. Taking a nap is a part of your daily routine.
Corinne would be so proud of us! Nap time was essential for college success. With all those late nights studying, or out drinking, that mid-afternoon nap became crucial to be a functioning human. When people say you don’t know what you have until it’s gone, it’s true. Enjoy that extra beauty sleep while you can.
Do I find it unfair we don’t have nap pods at my work? Absolutely. There is a good reason why people in Europe get 2-hour lunch breaks; it’s so they can nap! I’m team Corinne on this one. Adult me is a sleepy girl, and this is my protest for adult naptime.
Remember, don’t be too quick to grow up and move on from college. There are things you do in college that you will only get away with in college so live it up while you can!
