Nothing good in life comes easy. The same thing goes if you want long, luscious, healthy locks. Whether you were born with it, or are growing it out, it is a MUST that if you want long hair, you need to take care of it the right way.
Thankfully, I have been blessed with thick hair. However, it can be a HUGE pain in the you know what, and as much as I love it, I have definitely had moments where I wanted to pull a Britney Spears and shave it all off. (Love you, Britney!)
If you have long, thick hair too, than I know you know what i’m talking about! But, I am also sure that you can agree that as much work as it is, it is totally worth it. If you want to know how to take better care of your hair, here are some tips that I have found over the years that have really worked for me and helped me to keep my hair healthy and strong.
Tips For Long & Healthy Hair
- Invest in good quality shampoo & conditioner. – With some beauty products, you can get away with using the least expensive, drug store products. But when it comes to your shampoo and conditioner, I really feel that this is an area where you cannot hold back.
Talk to your hair stylist, or a professional about which high quality shampoos and conditioners they recommend. If you color or bleach your hair, you also want to make sure you get products that are specifically designed for color treated hair. Down below, I have provided a couple of my current favorites.
2. Be gentle. – Remember that your hair is very fragile, so you need to be as gentle with it as possible. When you have really long hair, it tends to become tangled after you wash it. Your hair is most fragile when it is wet, so it is important not to just tear away at it with a stiff brush.
One of my favorite finds of all time, is the Wet Brush. This brush is meant for effortlessly detangling your hair after you get out of the shower. I have seen a HUGE difference ever since I started using this brush and a few sprits of a conditioning detangler spray. Links to both are below.
3. Protect it. – It is also important to protect your hair from things like heat. I always like to use a heat protectant spray or cream before I blow dry or curl my hair.
The sun can also be harsh on your hair, especially in Florida where I live, so I like to use this nourishing 3 in 1 leave in hair treatment and sunscreen by SunBum. Not only does it protect your hair from UV rays, but it detangles, conditions and it smells amazing, like a coconut, tropical heaven.
4. Don’t over-wash. – There is absolutely no judgement here if you skip a day or two when it comes to washing your hair. In fact, it is actually good to let your natural oils nourish your hair once in awhile. Plus, no matter how good your hair products are, washing your hair everyday can be harsh.
So if you didn’t sweat much that day, give your hair a break from putting it through the wash and drying routine. You can freshen it up with a little hair perfume, my favorite is the Bless Your Hair collection by Jessie James Decker. Dry shampoo is another option, and you can find a list of our favorites here.
